아름다운 부녀 이야기
오랜만에 버스를 탔다.
빈자리가 있어 기분 좋게 앉았는데 잠시 뒤 스물 한 두 살로 보이는 예쁘장한 여학생이 버스에 올라탔다.
그리고는 내가 앉은 좌석의 손잡이를 잡고 섰다.
뽀얀 피부에 단아한 옷차림 한눈에 봐도 귀하게 자란 분위기가 느껴졌다.
흘끔흘끔 그 학생을 보고 있는데 버스가 횡단보도 신호 때문에 멈췄다.
창 밖으로 눈길을 돌리니 남루한 옷차림의 아저씨가 상자를 잔뜩 실은 손수레를 절룩거리며 힘겹게 끌고 있었다.
그 모습을 보고 뒷자리에 앉아 있던 아주머니와 아저씨가 말씀하셨다.
“참 불쌍하기도 하지. 쯧쯧.”
“그러게. 몸도 성치 않은 사람이 날도 추운데 고생이 많네.”
그 순간 내 옆에 서 있던 그 예쁜 여학생이 창문을 열고 “아빠” 하고 큰소리로 부르는 것이었다.
사람들은 설마 하는 눈초리 창 밖을 내다보았다.
손수레를 끌던 아저씨는 걸음을 멈추고 버스를 바라보며
“이제 집에 가니?”
“네, 아빠. 그런데 옷을 왜 그렇게 얇게 입고 나오셨어요? 감기 들면 어쩌려고요.”
딸을 보며 아저씨가 웃음 짓는다.
딸도 아빠를 보며 웃는다.
그 웃음에서 빛이 난다.
아저씨는 많은 사람 앞에서도 당신을 부끄러워하지 않는 딸이 고맙고 흐뭇하신 모양이다.
그렇기에 추운 날에도 사랑스런 딸자식을 위해 불편한 몸을 이끌고 나오신 거겠지.
버스 안이 조용해졌다.
모두 똑같은 생각을 하고 있나 보다.
‘이 아이,
얼굴 만큼이나 마음도 곱다’ 라고…
어느새 내눈에서는 눈물이~~~글썽였다
