Matthew Chapter 18

The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven

18:1 

At that time

the disciples
came to Jesus and
asked,

“Who, then,

is
the greatest
in the kingdom of
heaven?”

2 

He
called

a
little child
to him,

and
placed the child
among them.

3 

And
he said:

“Truly
I tell you,

unless

you
change

and
become like
little children,

you
will never
enter

the
kingdom of

heaven.

4 

Therefore,

whoever
takes

the
lowly
position

of
this child

is

the greatest

in
the kingdom of
heaven.

5 

And

whoever
welcomes

one
such child

in
my name

welcomes
me.

Causing to Stumble

6

 “If
anyone

causes

one
of these little
ones—

those
who believe
in me—

to
stumble,

it
would be
better for them

to have
a large millstone
hung around their neck

and
to be drowned
in the depths of
the sea.

7 

Woe
to the world

because
of the things
that cause people

to stumble!

Such things
must come,

but
woe to
the person

through
whom they come!

8 

If
your hand

or
your foot
causes you to
stumble,

cut it off
and throw it away.

It is better
for you to enter life
maimed or crippled

than
to have
two hands

or
two feet
and be thrown

into
eternal fire.

9 

And
if your eye
causes you to stumble,

gouge
it out

and
throw it away.

It is better
for you to enter life
with one eye

than
to have
two eyes

and
be thrown
into the fire of
hell.

 

The Parable of the Wandering Sheep

10 

“See that
you do not despise
one of these little ones.

For
I tell you

that
their angels
in heaven

always
see the face of
my Father in heaven.

[11] [a]

12 

“What do you think?

If
a man owns
a hundred sheep,

and
one of them
wanders away,

will he not
leave the ninety-nine
on the hills

and
go to look for
the one

that
wandered off?

13 

And
if he finds it,

truly I tell you,

he
is happier
about that one sheep

than
about the ninety-nine

that
did not
wander off.

14 

In the same way

your Father
in heaven

is
not
willing

that
any of these
little ones
should perish.

Dealing With Sin in the Church

15 

“If
your brother
or sister

sins,

go
and point out
their fault,

just
between
the two of you.

If
they listen
to you,

you
have won
them over.

16 

But
if they will not
listen,

take one
or two others
along,

so that
‘every matter
may be established

by
the testimony
of two or three witnesses.’

17 

If
they
still refuse
to listen,

tell it
to the church;

and
if they refuse
to listen even to
the church,

treat them
as you would a pagan
or a tax collector.

18

 “Truly I tell you,

whatever
you bind on earth

will be
bound in heaven,

and
whatever

you
loose on earth

will be
loosed in heaven.

19 

“Again,

truly
I tell you that

if
two of you
on earth agree about
anything they ask for,

it will be done
for them

by
my Father
in heaven.

20 

For
where two
or three gather
in my name,

there am I

with them.”

 

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant

21 

Then

Peter
came to Jesus
and asked,

“Lord,
how many times
shall I forgive my brother
or sister

who
sins against
me?

Up to
seven times?”

22 

Jesus
answered,

“I tell you,

not
seven times,

but
seventy-
seven times.

23

 “Therefore,

the
kingdom of
heaven

is
like a king

who
wanted to
settle accounts

with
his servants.

24 

As
he began
the settlement,

a man
who owed him
ten thousand bags of
gold

was
brought to
him.

 

25 

Since
he was not
able to pay,

the master
ordered that

he and his wife
and his children

and
all that he had
be sold

to
repay
the debt.

26 

“At this

the servant
fell on his knees
before him.

‘Be patient with me,’
he begged,

‘and
I will pay back
everything.’

27 

The servant’s master
took pity on him,

canceled
the debt

and
let him go.

28

 “But

when
that servant
went out,

he
found

one
of his
fellow servants

who
owed him

a hundred
silver coins.

 He
grabbed him

and
began to
choke him.

‘Pay back
what you owe me!’

he
demanded.

29 

“His
fellow servant
fell to his knees

and
begged him,

‘Be patient
with me,

and
I will pay it
back.’

30 

“Bu

t he
refused.

Instead,
he went off

and
had the man
thrown into prison

until
he could pay
the debt.

31 

When
the other servants
saw what had happened,

they were
outraged

and
went and told
their master everything
that had happened.

32

 “Then
the master called
the servant in.

‘You wicked servant,’

he said,
‘I canceled
all that debt of yours

because
you begged me to.

33 

Shouldn’t you
have had mercy

on
your
fellow servant

just as
I had on you?’

34 

In anger
his master handed
him over to the jailers
to be tortured,

until
he should
pay back all he
owed.

35 

“This is
how my heavenly
Father will treat each of you

unless

you forgive
your brother or sister

from
your heart.”

못하리라

누구든지
이 어린 아이와 같이

자기를
낮추는 사람이

천국에서
큰자니라

18:5

또 누구든지
내 이름으로

이런
어린 아이 하나를
영접하면

곧 나를 영접함이니

18:6

누구든지

나를 믿는
이 작은 자 중 하나를
실족하게 하면

차라리
연자 맷돌이

그 목에 달려서

깊은 바다에
빠뜨려지는 것이
나으리라

18:7

실족하게 하는 일들이
있음으로 말미암아

세상에
화가 있도다

실족하게 하는일이
없을 수는 없으나

실족하게 하는
그 사람에게는

화가 있도다

18:8

만일

네 손이나
네 발이

너를
범죄하게하거든
찍어 내버리라

장애인이나
다리저는 자로

영생에
들어가는 것이

두 손과
두 발을 가지고

영원한 불에
던져지는 것보다
나으니라

18:9

만일

네 눈이
너를 범죄하게 하거든
빼어 내버리라

한 눈으로
영생에 들어가는
것이

두 눈을 가지고

지옥 불에
던져지는 것보다
나으니라

 

18:10

삼가

이 작은 자 중의
하나도

업신 여기지 말라

너희에게
말하노니

그들의
 천사들이

하늘에서
하늘에 계신
내 아버지의 얼굴을

항상 뵈옵느니라

18:12

너희 생각에는
어떠하냐

만일
어떤 사람이
양 백 마리가 있는데

그 중의 하나가
길을 잃었으면

그 아흔아홉 마리를
산에 두고 가서

길 잃은 양을
찾지 않겠느냐

18:13

진실로
너희에게 이르노니

만일
찾으면

길을 잃지 아니한
아흔아홉 마리보다

이것을
더 기뻐하리라

18:14

이와 같이

이 작은 자 중의
하나라도 잃는 것은

하늘에 계신
너희 아버지의 뜻이
아니니라

18:15

네 형제가
죄를 범하거든

가서
너와 그사람과만
상대하여 권고하라

만일 들으면
네가 네 형제를 얻은
것이요

18:16

만일
듣지 않거든
한두 사람을 데리고가서

두세 증인의 입으로
말마다 확증하게
하라

18:17

만일
그들의 말도
듣지 않거든

교회에말하고
교회의 말도 듣지 않거든

이방인과
세리와 같이 여기라

18:18

진실로
너희에게 이르노니

무엇이든지
너희가 땅에서 매면

하늘에서도 매일것이요

무엇이든지
땅에서 풀면

하늘에서도 풀리리라

18:19

진실로
다시 너희에게
이르노니

너희중의
두 사람이

땅에서
합심하여

무엇이든지
구하면

하늘에 계신
내 아버지께서
그들을 위하여 이루게
하시리라

18:20

두세 사람이
내 이름으로 모인 곳에는

나도
그들 중에 있느니라

18:21

그 때에
베드로가 나아와
이르되

주여

형제가
내게 죄를 범하면

몇 번이나
용서하여 주리이까

일곱 번까지
하오리이까

18:22

예수께서
이르시되

네게 이르노니

일곱번뿐
아니라

일곱 번을
일흔 번까지라도
할지니라

18:23

그러므로
천국은

그 종들과
결산하려하던
어떤 임금과 같으니

18:24

결산할 때에

만 달란트
빚진 자 하나를
데려오매

18:25

갚을 것이
없는지라

주인이 명하여

그몸과
아내와 자식들과
모든 소유를 다팔아
갚게 하라 하니

18:26

그 종이
엎드려 절하며
이르되

내게 참으소서
다 갚으리이다
하거늘

18:27

그 종의 주인이
불쌍히 여겨 놓아 보내며

그 빚을
탕감하여 주었더니

18:28

그 종이
나가서

자기에게
백 데나리온
빚진 동료 한 사람을 만나

붙들어
목을잡고

이르되

빚을
갚으라 하매

18:29

그 동료가
엎드려

간구하여 이르되

나에게
참아 주소서
갚으리이다 하되

18:30

허락하지
아니하고

이에 가서
그가 빚을 갚도록
옥에 가두거늘

18:31

그 동료들이
그것을 보고

몹시
딱하게여겨

주인에게 가서
그 일을 다 알리니

18:32

이에

주인이
그를 불러다가
말하되

악한 종아
네가 빌기에

내가
네 빚을
전부탕감하여
주었거늘

18:33

내가 너를
불쌍히 여김과 같이

너도 네동료를
불쌍히 여김이
마땅하지 아니하냐
하고

18:34

주인이 노하여

그 빚을
다 갚도록

저를
옥졸들에게
넘기니라

18:35

너희가 각각

마음으로부터
형제를 용서하지
아니하면

나의
하늘 아버지께서도

너희에게
이와 같이 하시리라
