To a Thousand Generations

“You
shall not
make for yourself
an image

in
the form
of anything
in heaven
above

or
on the
earth
beneath
or in the waters
below.

You
shall not
bow down to them
or worship
them;

for I,
the Lord
your God,
am a jealous
God,

punishing
the children
for the sin of
the parents

to
the third
and fourth
generation of those
who hate me,

but
showing love
to a thousand generations
of those who
love me

and
keep my
commandments.

Proverbs Chapter 29

1

Whoever
remains stiff-necked
after many
rebukes

will
suddenly
be destroyed—

without remedy.

2

When
the righteous
thrive,

the people
rejoice;

when
the wicked
rule,

the people
groan.

3

A man
who loves
wisdom

brings

joy

to
his father,

but
a companion of
prostitutes

squanders
his wealth.

4

By
justice

a king

gives

a country

stability,

  but

those

who are greedy

for bribes

tear it down.

5

Those who
flatter their
neighbors

   are
spreading nets
for their
feet.

6

Evildoers
are snared by
their own
sin,

  but
the righteous

shout for joy

and

are glad.

7

The
righteous

care about

justice

for the poor,

but
the wicked

have no

such concern.

8

Mockers
stir up a city,

but
the wise
turn away anger.

9

If
a wise person
goes to court
with a fool,

   the fool
rages and
scoffs,

and
there is

no peace.

10

The
bloodthirsty

hate

a person
of integrity

 and
seek

to kill

the upright.

11

Fools
give full vent
to their rage,

   but
the wise

bring calm

in the end.

12

If

a ruler

listens to

lies,

 all
his officials

become

wicked.

13

The poor
and the oppressor
have this
in common:

The Lord

gives sight

to the eyes of

both.

14

If

a king

judges

the poor

with
fairness,

his
throne

will be

established

forever.

15

A rod
and a reprimand
impart wisdom,

but
a child left
undisciplined

disgraces
its mother.

16

When
the wicked

thrive,

so does

sin,

but

the righteous
will see

their
downfall.

17

Discipline

your children,

and
they will

give you

peace;

they
will bring you
the delights

you desire.

18

Where
there is no
revelation,

people

cast off

restraint;

but
blessed is
the one

who

heeds

wisdom’s
instruction.

19

Servants
cannot be
corrected by
mere words;

though
they understand,
they will not
respond.

20

Do you see
someone who speaks
in haste?

There is
more hope for a fool
than for them.

21

A servant
pampered from
youth

   will
turn out to be
insolent.

22

An angry person
stirs up
conflict,

    and
a hot-tempered
person

commits

many

sins.

23

Pride

brings

a person low,

but

the lowly
in spirit

gain

honor.

24

The accomplices
of thieves

are
their own
enemies;

they are
put under
oath

and
dare not

testify.

25

Fear of man
will prove
to be a snare,

    but

whoever
trusts
in the Lord

is

kept safe.

26

Many seek
an audience
with a ruler,

   but
it is from
the Lord

that

one gets

justice.

27

The righteous

detest

the dishonest;

the wicked

detest

the upright.

shown you,

O
mortal,

what
is good.

And

what does
the Lord require
of you?

To act justly

and

to love mercy

and
to walk
humbly with
your

God.

Listen!
The Lord is
calling to the
city—

and
to fear
your name is
wisdom—

“Heed
the rod and
the One who
appointed
it.

Am I
still to forget
your ill-gotten
treasures,

you wicked house,

and

the short ephah,
which is
accursed?

11

Shall I
acquit someone
with dishonest
scales,

with
a bag of false
weights?

12

Your
rich people
are violent;

your
inhabitants are
liars

and their
tongues speak

deceitfully.

13

Therefore,
I have begun to
destroy
you,

to ruin you

because of
your
sins.

14

You will eat
but not be
satisfied;

your stomach
will still be
empty.

You will
store up but
save nothing,

because
what you save
I will give to the
sword.

You will plant
but not
harvest;

you will press
olives but not use
the oil,

you will crush
grapes but not drink
the wine.

You have observed
the statutes of
Omri

and

all
the practices
of Ahab’s

give you
over to ruin

You said,
‘I am forever


    the eternal queen!’

But
you did not
consider these
things

or
reflect on
what might
happen.

8

“Now then, listen,
you lover of
pleasure,

    lounging
in your security
and saying to
yourself,

   ‘I am,
and there is none
besides me.


I will never be
a widow

   or
suffer the loss of
children.’

9

Both of
these will
overtake
you

 in
a moment,
on a single
day:

   loss
of children
and widowhood.

They will
come upon you
in full measure,

   in spite of
your many
sorceries

and
all your potent
spells.

10

You have
trusted in your
wickedness

   and
have said,
‘No one sees me.’

Your wisdom
and knowledge
mislead
you

   when you say to yourself,
‘I am, and there is none
besides me.’

11

Disaster
will come upon
you,

 and
you will not
know

how to conjure
it away.


A calamity
will fall upon
you

 that
you cannot
ward off with
a ransom;


a catastrophe
you cannot
foresee

will
suddenly
come upon
you.

12

“Keep on, then,
with your magic
spells

   and
with your
many sorceries,

  which
you have
labored at
since childhood.


Perhaps
you will succeed,
perhaps you will
cause terror.

13

All the counsel
you have received
has only worn
you out!

    Let your
astrologers
come forward,

those
stargazers
who make predictions
month by
month,

   let them
save you
from what is coming
upon you.

14

Surely
they are like
stubble;

the fire
will burn them
up.

They
cannot
even save
themselves

from
the power of
the flame.

These are not
coals for
warmth;

    this is not
a fire to sit by.

15

That is
all they are
to you—

these
you have dealt
with

and
labored with
since childhood.

All of them
go on in their
error;

there
is
not one

that
can save
you.

Isaiah 1:15-31

When
you spread out
your hands in
prayer,

I

hide

my eyes

from you;

even
when you offer
many prayers,

    I

am

not

listening.

Your hands
are full of
blood!

16 

Wash

and

make
yourselves
clean.

  Take your
evil deeds

out of my
sight;

    stop doing wrong.

17 

Learn

to do right;

seek

justice.

    Defend
the oppressed.

Take up
the cause of

the
fatherless;

    plead
the case of

the widow.

18 

“Come now,

let us
settle
the matter,”

    says the Lord.

“Though
your sins are
like scarlet,

    they shall be
as white as
snow;

though
they are red as
crimson,

    they shall be
like wool.

19 

If
you are
willing and
obedient,

    you will eat

the
good things
of the land;

20 

but
if you resist
and rebel,

    you will be
devoured by
the sword.”

See

the faithful
city

  has
become
a prostitute!

She

once was
full of

justice;
  righteousness

used to
dwell in her—

    but

murderers!

Your silver
has become
dross,

  your choice
wine

diluted with
water.

Your rulers
are rebels,

    partners with
thieves;

they all
love bribes

and

chase
after gifts.

They
do not

defend

the
cause of
the fatherless;

 the
widow’s case

does not come
before
them.

Therefore
the Lord,

the Lord Almighty,

    the Mighty One
of Israel,

declares:

“Ah!
I will vent

my wrath
on my foes

  and
avenge myself

on my
enemies.

I
will
turn my hand
against
you;

    I
will
thoroughly
purge
away

your dross

    and
remove
all your

impurities.

26 

I
will
restore

your
leaders as in
days of
old,

    your
rulers as
at the beginning.

Afterward
you will be
called

    the City of
Righteousness,

    the Faithful City.”

27 

Zion
will be
delivered

with
justice,

    her
penitent ones

with
righteousness.

But
rebels
and sinners

will
both be
broken,

    and

those
who forsake
the Lord

will
perish.

“You will be
ashamed

because of
the sacred
oaks

 in
which
you have
delighted;

disgraced

of the gardens

an oak
