카네기 후계자
강철왕 카네기가 은퇴하기 전에 후계자를 발표하던 때였습니다.
막대한 부와 명예를 가질 수 있는 그 자리에 과연 어떤 사람이 앉게 될 것인가 전 세계의 이목이 쏠리고 있었습니다.
카네기는 후계자로 의외의 인물인 쉬브를 임명했는데
그는 중학교도 나오지 못한 데다가 회사에 청소부로 입사한 사람이라 모두가 놀랐습니다.
그가 카네기의 후계자가 될 것이라고는 어떤 사람도 예상하지 못했습니다. 심지어 쉬브 자신도 매우 놀랐습니다.
카네기는 쉬브를 후계자로 지명한 이유로 성실성과 책임감을 들었습니다.
“쉬브 씨는 내가 유일하게 이름을 알고 있는 청소부였네.
정원을 청소하라고 하면 항상 그 주변까지 즐겁게 자발적으로 청소를 하곤 했지.
내 비서 일을 할 때는 나의 일거수일투족을 공부하며 기록하더군. 업무 시간이 끝나도 내가 퇴근을 하기 전에는 항상 자리를 지켰네.
이런 사람에게 회사를 물려주지 않으면 어떤 사람에게 물려주겠나?
좋은 대학을 나오고 유능한 사람은 매년 수만 명씩 나타나지만
이런 성실성과 책임감을 가진 사람은 좀처럼 나타나지 않는 법이지.”
