♤어느 대학 졸업식♤
가난한 어머니와
아들이 살고 있었다.
어머니는 어렵게
아들의 학비를
마련하여 공부를 시켰다.
어머니의 눈물겨운
노고로 아들이
대학을 졸업하게 되었다.
그러나,
어머니에게는
고민이 생겼다
졸업식장에
가기가 두려웠다.
초라하고 누추한
자신의 모습이
수석 졸업을 차지한
아들의 영예에
오점이라도 되면
어쩌나 하는 걱정에서였다.
그러나 아들은
간곡히 권유하여
어머니를 졸업식장에
모시고 나갔다.
아들은 졸업 연설을 통해
수석 졸업의 영광을
하나님과 스승들,
그리고 자신의
어머니에게 돌렸다.
우뢰와 같은 박수 속에서
그는 학장으로부터
금메달을 받았다.
그는 메달을
자신의 목에 걸지 않고
두 손으로 받쳐 들고는
청중들 틈으로 걸어 나갔다.
사람들의 시선이
초라한 옷을 입은 그의
어머니에게 집중되었다.
“어머니 고맙습니다.
어머니의 은혜로
이렇게 졸업을
하게 되었습니다.
이 메달은
마땅히 어머니께서
받으셔야 합니다.”
그는 어머니의 목에
금메달을 걸어드렸다.
참으로 감동적인
졸업 연설이었다.
그 후 그는
그 대학의 학장이 되었다.
후엔 제28대 미국
대통령에 선출되었다.
노벨 평화상도 받았다.
그가 바로
민족자결주의를 제창한
미국의 윌슨 대통령이다!
