Pope Francis Condemns Death of George Floyd

Rome(CNN)

Pope Francis has called
the death of George Floyd
at the hands of US police officers “tragic”
and said he is praying for him and
“all those others who have lost
their lives as a result of
the sin of racism.”

After an eighth night of protests
across the United States,
Francis addressed Floyd’s death
during his weekly Angelus prayer
at the Vatican on Wednesday.

“Dear brothers and sisters
in the United States,
I have witnessed with great concern
the disturbing social unrest
in your nation in these past days,
following the tragic death of
Mr. George Floyd,”
Francis said.

“My friends,
we cannot tolerate
or turn a blind eye to racism
and exclusion in any form
and yet claim to defend
the sacredness of every
human life.

“At the same time,
we have to recognize that
the violence of recent nights is
self-destructive and self-defeating.

Nothing is gained
by violence and so much is lost,”
he urged.

CNN Senior Vatican Analyst
John Allen said it is “relatively rare”
for the Pope to mention a specific
person by name.

A Vatican spokesperson told CNN
it was a “special appeal.”

$150 million to reinvest into the black community

$150 million to reinvest into the black community

As peaceful protests continue,
LAPD budget could be cut by
up to $150 million to reinvest
in communities of color.

Los Angeles officials said
they will look to cut up to $150 million
from the police budget as part of
a wider effort to reinvest more dollars
into the local black community.

As protests over police brutality
and the death of George Floyd
stretched into a sixth day,
Los Angeles officials said Wednesday
that they will look to cut $100 million to
$150 million from the city’s police budget
as part of a broader effort to reinvest
more dollars into the black community.

In all,
Mayor Eric Garcetti pledged that
the city would “identify $250 million
in cuts so we can invest in jobs,
in health, in education and in healing,”
especially in the city’s black community
“as well as communities of color and
women and people who have been
left behind.”

Those cuts, he said,
would be “to every department,
including the Police Department,
because we all have to be part of
this solution together. We all have to
step up and say, ‘What can we sacrifice?'”

Eileen Decker, president of
the Los Angeles Police Commission, said
that effort includes identifying
$100 million to $150 million in cuts
from the Police Department —
something City Council President
Nury Martinez and other council
members had called for earlier in the day.
The LAPD’s total annual budget is
$1.86 billion.

Obama to Young People of Color

Obama to Young People of Color

Obama to young people of color:
‘Your lives matter. Your dreams matter.’

Former President Barack Obama
weighed in on how systemic racism
has been thrown into “high relief”
during both the COVID-19 crisis
which has disproportionately
impacted communities of color and
the nationwide protests amid tension
between law enforcement and
the minority communities they serve.

During a virtual town hall Wednesday,
coming amidst civil unrest across
the United States over the killing of
another unarmed black man
at the hands of police officers,
Obama said that the tragedy of
recent events, while “difficult and
scary and uncertain,” also represent
“an incredible opportunity for people
to be awakened to some of (the)
underlying trends” of systemic racism
in the United States.

“They offer an opportunity
for us to work together to tackle them,
to take them on, to change America and
make it live up to its highest ideals,”
he said.

“Part of what’s made me so hopeful is
the fact that so many young people
have been galvanized and activated
and motivated and mobilized.

Because historically,
so much of the progress that
we’ve made in our society has been
because of young people. ”

Speaking directly to
young people of color he said
“I want you to know that
your lives matter.
Your dreams matter.”
