The
true light

that
gives light
to every
man

was
coming into
the world.

He was
in the world,

and though

the world
was made
through
him,

recognize

거룩한 성배

정채봉님이 들려주는 크리스천 예화

중세기 이탈리아에 기사도 정신에 충렬한 한 성주(城主)가 있었다. 그는 살아 생전에 그 누구도 넘볼 수 없는 공을 세웠으면 하고 골똘히 생각했다. 그러자 한 가지 일이 떠올랐다. 그것은 예수님께서 제자들과 더불어 최후의 만찬을 나눌 때 사용한 금잔을 찾아내는 일이었다. 성주는 당장 많은 돈을 준비해서 말을 타고 나섰다.

그런데 성문을 나서려 할 때 성문 앞에서 한 문둥병자 거지를 만나게 되었다. 그가 “한푼 도와주십시오”라고 말하자 성주는 “무슨 소리냐? 나는 지금 우리 구세주의 영광스러운 금잔을 찾으러 가는 길이다. 냉큼 비키지 못할까!”라고 소리쳤다.

하지만 거지가 “성주님, 저는 며칠을 굶었습니다. 제발 한푼만!” 하고 매달리자 성주는 마지못해 금화 한 닢을 꺼내 땅바닥에 내던지며 “자, 이걸 가지고 떠나라. 나는 지금 내 인생의 큰일 때문에 너를 돌볼 겨를이 없다”라고 소리질렀다.

이때부터 수십 년 동안 성주는 예루살렘은 물론 이탈리아 구석구석을, 그리고 멀리 이집트와 사막에까지도 금잔을 찾기 위해 뒤지고 다녔으나 헛수고였다. 드디어 돈은 떨어지고 머리에는 하얀 서리가 앉았다. 그는 지치고 지친 몸을 이끌고 고향으로 돌아왔다. 용마를 타고 비단옷을 입고 떠나던 때와는 달리 낡은 옷에 지팡이를 짚은 쓸쓸한 모습이었다.

그런데 그가 성문 앞에 다다랐을 때였다. 그의 앞에 예전의 그 문둥병자 거지가 나타나 “한푼 도와주십시오”라고 말했다. 그 동안 숱하게 겪은 고생으로 이제 성주의 거드름은 잦아지고 사랑이 솟아나 있었다. 그러나 성주에게는 거지에게 나누어줄 것이 아무것도 없었다. 마른 빵 한 조각밖에는…

성주는 빵의 절반을 잘라 거지한테 주었다. 그리고 허리에 차고 있던 쪽박을 들고 옹달샘으로 가서 물 한바가지를 길어와 거지에게 주며 “내가 이렇게 당신을 돕는 것이 변변치 못해 미안하오. 하지만 이것이 내 전부인 것을 어떡하오”라고 말했다.

그 순간 갑자기 문둥병자 거지가 예수님의 모습으로 변해 “두려워 말고 들어라. 금잔을 찾으려고 아무리 헤매어도 소용이 없다. 샘물을 길어온 그 보잘 것 없는 쪽박이 나의 성배다. 네가 떼어준 빵이 나의 살이며 이 물이 내 피다. 가난하고 소외받는 이와 더불어 나누는 식사야말로 진정한 성찬이다”라고 말했다.

William Alderman Linton Family

William Alderman Linton (1891-1960)
moved to Korea in 1912 and dedicated
the rest of his life to serving and
developing Korean society
as a Presbyterian
missionary and
educator.

Family
Even after
Linton’s death in 1960,
his family has continued
to serve Korea and is currently
impacting Korean society
in Christian missions,
medical care, and
public service.

Two of
William Linton’s sons,
Hugh Linton and Thomas Dwight Linton,
served as Christian missionaries
in Korea.

Hugh Linton
planted more than 600 churches
in South Jeolla province,
served in the Korean War,
and during the 1960s established
several tuberculosis clinics.

Dwight Linton
planted churches in the Gwangju area
and later, while living in the US,
served on the board of
Christian Friends of Korea
for over a decade.

Two of
Hugh Linton’s sons
have made significant
contributions to Korea
in medical care.

Dr. John Linton,
Director of Severance Hospital’s
International Care Center located
in Seoul, invented a new type of
ambulance for Korea in 1993.

In 2012,
he was granted
Korean citizenship
in recognition of his contribution
to Korean Society. In 1995,

Dr. Stephen Winn Linton
established the Eugene Bell Foundation,
named for William Linton’s father-in-law
who also served as a missionary in Korea.

This non-profit organization
provides medicine and medical equipment
to North Korea and has provided
treatment to more than
200,000 North Korean
tuberculosis patients.
