Idolatry Is Foolishness

Isaiah 44:3-20

3

For I will
pour water
on him

who
is thirsty,

And floods
on the dry
ground;

I
will
pour My
Spirit

on
your
descendants,

And

My
blessing
on your offspring;

4

They will
spring up
among the grass

Like willows
by the water
courses.’

5

One will say,
‘I am the Lord’s’;

Another
will call himself
by the name of
Jacob;

Another
will write
with his hand,

‘The Lord’s,’
And name himself
by the name of Israel.

There Is No Other God

6

“Thus
says the Lord,
the King of Israel,

And
his Redeemer,
the Lord of hosts:

‘I am the First

and

I am the Last;

Besides Me
there is no
God.

7

And
who can
proclaim as I do?

Then
let him
declare it

and set it
in order for Me,

Since
I appointed
the ancient people.

And
the things
that are coming

and
shall come,

Let them
show these
to them.

8

Do not fear,
nor be afraid;

Have I no
t told you from
that time,

and
declared it?

You are
My witnesses.

Is there
a God

besides Me?

Indeed

there is
no other Rock;

I know
not one.’ ”

Idolatry Is Foolishness

9

Those who
make an image,

all of them
are useless,

And their precious things
shall not profit;

They are
their own witnesses;

They neither see
nor know,

that they may be
ashamed.

10

Who would
form a god or mold
an image

That profits him
nothing?

11

Surely all his companions
would be ashamed;

And

the workmen,
they are mere
men.

Let them
all be gathered
together,

Let them
stand up;

Yet
they shall
fear,

They shall be
ashamed
together.

12

The blacksmith
with the tongs works
one in the coals,

Fashions it
with hammers,

And works it
with the strength
of his arms.

Even so,
he is hungry,

and his
strength fails;

He drinks
no water and
is faint.

13

The craftsman
stretches out
his rule,

He marks
one out with
chalk;

He fashions it
with a plane,

He marks it out
with the compass,

And makes it like
the figure of
a man,

According to
the beauty of
a man,

that it may remain
in the house.

14

He cuts down
cedars for
himself,

And takes
the cypress and
the oak;

He secures it
for himself

among the trees
of the forest.

He plants
a pine,

and
the rain
nourishes
it.

15

Then
it shall be
for a man to burn,

For he will
take some of it
and warm himself;

Yes, he kindles it
and bakes
bread;

Indeed

he makes
a god

and
worships it;

He makes it
a carved image,

and
falls down
to it.

16

He burns
half of it
in the fire;

With
this half
he eats meat;

He roasts
a roast,

and
is satisfied.

He even
warms himself
and says,

“Ah!
I am warm,
I have seen the fire.”

17

And

the rest of it
he makes

into
a god,

His carved
image.

He falls down
before it

and
worships
it,

Prays to it
and says,

“Deliver me,

for you are
my god!”

18

They
do not
know

nor
understand;

For He has
shut their
eyes,

so that
they cannot
see,

And their
hearts,

so that
they cannot
understand.

19

And no one
considers
in his heart,

Nor is there
knowledge

nor understanding
to say,

“I have burned
half of it in the fire,

Yes, I have also
baked bread on
its coals;

I have roasted
meat and eaten it;

And shall I
make the rest of it
an abomination?

Shall I fall down
before a block
of wood?”

He feeds on
ashes;

A deceived heart
has turned him
aside;

And he cannot
deliver his
soul,

Nor say,

“Is there not a lie
In my right hand?”

Oh,
that my head
were a spring of
water

and
my eyes
a fountain of
tears!

I
would
weep

day
and night

for
the slain of
my people.

Oh,
that I had
in the desert

a lodging place
for travelers,

so that
I might leave
my people

and
go away
from them;

for
they are all
adulterers,

a crowd of
unfaithful
people.

“They
make ready
their tongue

like a bow,
to shoot
lies;

it
is not
by truth

that
they triumph
in the land.

They
go from one sin
to another;

they
do not
acknowledge
me,”

declares
the Lord.

4

“Beware
of your friends;

do not
trust anyone
in your
clan.

For
every one
of them
is

a deceiver,

and
every friend

a slanderer.

Friend

deceives

friend,

and

no one
speaks
the truth.

They
have taught
their tongues
to lie;

they
weary
themselves

with

sinning.

You

live

in
the midst

of
deception;

their deceit

they
refuse

to
acknowledge
me,”

refine

test them,

what else
can I do

tongue is

set traps
for them.

Should

I

not

punish

them

for this?”

declares
the Lord.

avenge
myself

on
such a nation
as this?”

I will weep
and wail

for
the mountains

and

take up
a lament

concerning
the wilderness
grasslands.

They are
desolate
and untraveled,

and
the lowing of
cattle is not heard.

The birds
have all fled

and
the animals
are gone.

“I will make
Jerusalem a heap
of ruins,

a haunt of
jackals;

and

I will lay
waste the towns
of Judah

so no one
can live there.”

Who
is wise enough
to understand
this?

Who
has been
instructed

by
the Lord

and
can explain it?

Why
has the land been
ruined

and
laid waste
like a desert

that
no one can
cross?

13

The Lord said,

“It is
because

they have
forsaken my
law,

which
I set before
them;

they
have not
obeyed me

or followed
my law.

14

Instead,

they have
followed

the
stubbornness

of
their
hearts;

they
have followed
the Baals,

as their ancestors
taught them.” 

15

Therefore

this is
what the Lord
Almighty,

the
God of
Israel, says:

“See,

I will make
this people eat
bitter food

and

drink
poisoned
water.

I will scatter
them

among
nations

that
neither they

nor
their ancestors
have known,

and

I will
pursue them
with the sword

until
I have made
an end of them.”

what the Lord

says:

“Consider now!

Call for
the wailing women
to come;

send
for the most skillful
of them.

Let them
come quickly
and wail over us

till
our eyes
overflow with
tears

and water
streams from
our eyelids.

The sound of
wailing is heard
from Zion:

‘How ruined
we are!

How great is
our shame!

We
must leave
our land

because
our houses are
in ruins.’”

Now,
you women,

hear
the word of
the Lord;

your ears

the words
of his mouth.

Teach
your daughters
how to wail;

teach
one another
a lament.

Death has
climbed in through
our windows

has entered
our fortresses;

removed

squares.

on the open field,

cut grain
behind the reaper,

no one
to gather them.’”

wise boast

their
wisdom

strong boast

strength

the rich
boast

riches,

who boasts

about this:

  that they have
the understanding
to know
me,

 “The days
are coming,”

idols were
on the beasts

carriages

loaded,

A burden
to the weary
beast.

bow down
together;

deliver the burden,

have
themselves
gone into

captivity.

“Listen to Me,
O house of Jacob,

Not One Is Upright

5 :1

“Go
up and down
the streets of
Jerusalem,

look around
and consider,

search
through her
squares.

If
you can
find but one
person

who
deals
honestly

and
seeks
the truth,

I
will
forgive
this city.

Although
they say,

‘As
surely as
the Lord lives,’

still
they are
swearing

falsely.”

3

Lord,

do not
your eyes look
for truth?

You
struck
them,

but

they
felt no pain;

you
crushed
them,

but

they
refused
correction.

They
made their
faces harder than
stone

and

refused

to
repent.

4

I thought,

“These are
only the poor;

they
are foolish,

for they
do not know
the way of the
Lord,

the
requirements
of their

God.

5

So
I will
go to the leaders

and
speak to
them;

surely
they know
the way of the
Lord,

the

requirements
of their
God.”

But
with one
accord

they
too had broken
off the yoke

and
torn off
the bonds.

Therefore

a lion
from the forest
will attack
them,

a wolf
from the desert
will ravage
them,

a leopard
will lie in wait
near their
towns

to
tear to
pieces any who
venture out,

for their
rebellion is
great

and
their
backslidings
many.

“Why
should I
forgive you?

Your
children
have forsaken
me

and
sworn by
gods

that
are not
gods.

I
supplied
all their needs,

yet

they
committed
adultery

and
thronged
to the houses of
prostitutes.

They
are well-fed,
lusty stallions,

each
neighing for
another man’s
wife.

Should I not
punish them for
this?”

declares
the Lord.

“Should I not
avenge myself
on such a nation
as this?

“Go
through
her vineyards
and ravage them,

but
do not destroy
them

completely.

Strip off
her branches,

for
these people
do not belong
to

the Lord.

11

The people
of Israel and the people
of Judah    have been
utterly unfaithful
to me,”

declares
the Lord.

12

They
have lied
about the Lord;

they said,

“He
will
do nothing!

No
harm
will come
to us;

we
will never
see sword or
famine.

13

The
prophets
are but wind

and
the word
is not in them;

  so

let
what they
say

be
done
to them.”

14

Therefore

this is
what the Lord
God Almighty
says:

“Because
the people have
spoken these words,

I will make
my words in your
mouth a fire

and
these people
the wood

it
consumes.

15

People of Israel,”
declares
the Lord,

“I am
bringing
a distant nation
against you—

an ancient
and enduring
nation,

a people
whose language
you do not
know,

whose
speech you do not
understand.

16

Their quivers
are like an open
grave;

all
of them are
mighty warriors.

17

They will
devour your
harvests

and food,

devour
your sons
and daughters;

they will
devour your flocks
and herds,

devour
your vines
and fig trees.

With
the sword
they will destroy

the fortified
cities

in
which
you trust.

18

 “Yet
even in
those days,”

declares
the Lord,

“I will not
destroy you
completely.

19

And when
the people
ask,

‘Why has the Lord
our God done
all this to
us?’

you will
tell them,

‘As
you have
forsaken me

and

served
foreign gods
in your own
land,

so now
you will serve
foreigners

in
a land
not your own.’

“Announce this
to the descendants
of Jacob

and
proclaim it
in Judah:

21

Hear this,

you
foolish
and senseless
people,

who
have eyes

but
do not
see,

who
have ears

but
do not
hear:

22

Should you
not fear me?”

declares
the Lord.

“Should you not
tremble in my
presence?

I
made
the sand

a boundary
for the
sea,

an everlasting
barrier it cannot
cross.

The waves
may roll,

but
they cannot
prevail;

they may roar,
but they cannot
cross it.

But
these people
have stubborn

and
rebellious
hearts;

they
have turned
aside

and
gone away.

24

They
do not say
to themselves,

‘Let us
fear the Lord
our God,

who
gives
autumn

and
spring rains
in season,

who
assures us

of
the regular
weeks

of
harvest.’

25

Your
wrong doings
have kept these
away;

your sins
have deprived you
of good.

26

“Among
my people are
the wicked

who
lie in wait

like men
who snare
birds

and
like those
who set traps

to catch
people.

27

Like
cages full of
birds,

their houses
are full
of

deceit;

they
have become

rich
and powerful

28

    and
have grown fat
and sleek.

Their
evil deeds
have no limit;

they
do not
seek justice.

They
do not
promote

the case
of the fatherless;

they
do not
defend the just cause
of the poor.

Should I not
punish them
for this?”

declares
the Lord.

“A horrible
and shocking thing
has happened
in the land:

The prophets
prophesy
lies,

the priests
rule by their own
authority,

and
my people
love it this way.

But
what will you do
in the end?

새 사냥꾼이

살지고
윤택하며

또 행위가
심히 악하여

자기 이익을

송사

이 일들에
대하여

벌하지

거짓을
예언하며
